Felonies
Felonies
There are hundreds of felony charges. Felony classes are as follows starting from the most severe to least severe: A, B1, B2, C through I. The elements of each felony charge can be found in N.C.G.S. Chapter 14 and Chapter 90 for drug offenses. Punishments range from a suspended sentence with probation to death or life w/o parole. Most felony convictions are sentenced under structured sentencing which means that a Defendant is punished at a higher level for each prior conviction on his/her record. For example, a Defendant with no prior record many receive a suspended sentence and be placed on probation whereas a Defendant with prior convictions could end up in jail for months or years even though they are convicted of the same crime. Drug trafficking is not sentenced under structured sentencing and convictions carry mandatory minimum sentences as well as mandatory fines.
